ABOUT
EEO/SC
|
The
nonprofit Egypt Exploration Organization of Southern California
(EEO/SC) hosts
a steady stream of the world's leading Egyptologists for monthly
public lectures and
other events. With over 150 members, EEO/SC is one of the largest
and most active
supporters of public lectures about the exploration of Egypt. In
fact, we have
produced more than 500 such events over the past 20 years.
Based
at UCLA, EEO/SC is associated with the Los Angeles County Museum
of Art (LACMA), UCLA's Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Bowers
Museum
in Santa Ana, and the Egyptian Tourist Authority. The name of
our group was
derived to honor the founder of modern Egyptology, Sir William
Flinders Petrie,
whose original support group was called the Egypt Exploration
Fund and
is now known as the Egypt Exploration Society in London, England.
Suggested
donation for attending a lecture is $10.
Suggested donation for attending a lecture with dinner is $20.
Most lectures are held in members' homes in Los Angeles.

Los
Angeles Lecture:
Topic: "A Newly Discovered Pyramid: The BYU Expedition to Seila"
Speaker: Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, Associate Professor of Ancient Scripture and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Brigham Young University, Assistant Director, BYU Egypt Excavation Project at Seila
The Seila Pyramid was built by Snefru, the father of Khufu and first king of the Fourth Dynasty. Snefru built two pyramids at Dashur – the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid.Snefru was the first pharaoh to construct “true” pyramids rather than step-pyramids.
The pyramid he built at Seila is located six miles west of the Meidum pyramid. It’s smaller than the other three pyramids and appears rather isolated. It was built on a 52 degree angle, almost identical to that of Meidum, and has a causeway that goes nowhere (there’s no building at the end of it).
Dr. Muhlestein and a team of engineers used sophisticated GPS equipment to create a map of the pyramid and and a digital reconstruction. They also analyzed the site’s topography. The team found evidence that Seila is a true pyramid and may contain internal architecture and burial chambers. The pyramid also has a portico on the east side that appears to have been used for ritualistic purposes. For his lecture to EEO/SC, Dr. Muhlestein will report on recent discoveries.
After receiving his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Brigham Young University, Dr. Muhlestein graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a doctorate in Egyptology. As a rising Biblical scholar, Muhlestein taught in both the Religious Studies and History departments of BYU-Hawaii. Dr. Muhlestein’s research focuses on the texts and iconography of Egyptian religion, international contact between ancient Egypt and her neighbors, the Egyptian juridical process, Egyptian literature, and the overlap of the Biblical and Egyptian worlds, including the ancient and modern history of the Pearl of Great Price, among other things.
